IBS Prison Program

There are no any bad people in this world but there
are people who make mistake out of ignorance.

International Bodhisattva Sangha (IBS) started the Prison Program since 1995. IBS was formally established as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in November 2006. One of our main goals is to educate inmates in the state prisons about Buddhism, meditation, and the right way of life. Through Dharma education, many inmates found their inner peace and spiritual comfort.

As of mid-2017, IBS has been visiting 33 state prisons California, Oregon, Washington, and Ontario (Toronto, Canada). We are planning to setup 20 more dharma libraries for the rest of 2017.  With the help of passionate supporters, IBS is planning to set up libraries in all 36 state prisons in California in the future.

IBS is a small organization, and all the funding comes from generous donations from our supporters.  With your generous gift, we will have more opportunity to reach more inmates with our prison program, giving them strength and courage on their path in becoming a contributor to the community when they are released.

Appreciation Letter

July 20, 2013

Dear IBS Sponsors

On behalf of the International Bodhisattva Sangha (IBS), we would like to thank you for your support. Your contribution makes it possible for us to support and provide for guidance for inmates who have genuine regret for their past actions and are to working toward becoming better members of society upon release.

IBS was founded in 1995 on the belief that “everyone deserves a second chance”. Since 2006, IBS has been established as a 501 (C) (3) non-profit organization. Our mission is to educate prisoners’ on Buddha’s teachings. Our efforts have made tremendous differences in the lives of numerous inmates. With the help of your donations and other fund raising events, we have expanded services to include visiting 8 prisons on a monthly basis, established 21 libraries in 7 different prisons and correspondence via letters with 7 other prisons in California. These successes would not have been possible without the support and generosity of the dedicated and devoted sponsors, which has enabled IBS to continue to provide much-needed support to the inmates who are sincerely working to change their lives.

As we continue to fulfill our mission of educating inmates on the Buddha’s teachings, we also aim to set up 20 more libraries this year. With the support of people like you, we have managed to work towards achieving our mission. Our goal is to one day offer Dharma and meditation teachings in all of California’s 36 state prisons. Thank you for enabling us to continue our mission.

Sincerely,

Shirley Tam

Secretary of IBS

For more than a decade and a half, I have watched the IBS prison visitation program with great admiration. They have accomplished a great deal over the years with regular organized events in Calpatria Prison. Providing Buddhist information and teaching as well as training in meditation, IBS now has 125 members at Calipatria State Prison( Approximately 500 members at all 4 prisons that IBS are currently visiting. They are Chuckwalla State Prison, Centinela state Prison and Pleasant Valley State Prison ) participating in the meditation and teaching sessions. The success of this program is no better judged than by those who are taking part in it. A sign of the approval of these participating inmates is the fact that when some of them have been transferred to other facilities, one of the first things they do is to set up a new meditation group. In this way, the program has expanded led by the requests and efforts of the inmates in five different places. It has been a great pleasure and learning experience to be involved with this activity. I believe it represents the highest level of the application of compassion as taught in Buddhism.
